What is Singles?
Singles in pickleball refers to a game format where two players compete against each other, one on each side of the court. The objective remains the same as in doubles, where players aim to score points by hitting the ball over the net and into the opponent's court, while adhering to the game's rules.
Singles explained
Singles in pickleball is a competitive format that involves two players facing off, one on each side of the court. This format highlights individual skill and strategy, as each player must cover the entire court by themselves, unlike doubles where players share the court space. In singles, the game is played on a standard pickleball court, which measures 20 feet wide by 44 feet long, and the rules remain consistent with those of doubles play.
The service begins with one player serving the ball diagonally to the opponent’s service area. Players score points by winning rallies, which occur when one player fails to return the ball in accordance with the rules. This could be by hitting the ball out of bounds, failing to let it bounce once before returning it, or volleying the ball from within the non-volley zone (often referred to as the kitchen).
Playing singles requires a high level of endurance and agility, as players must quickly move to all corners of the court. It also demands strategic thinking, as players often use placement, spins, and shot selection to outmaneuver their opponent. Unlike doubles, where teamwork and positioning play a significant role, singles places the emphasis solely on individual performance.
Scoring in singles follows the same rules as in doubles, with games typically played to 11, 15, or 21 points, depending on the tournament or agreed-upon rules. Players must win by at least two points. This competitive format is popular among players who enjoy a more intense and focused game, allowing them to showcase their skills and improve their gameplay.
