Footwork Drill For Beginner

If you're new to pickleball, footwork is key. This guide will help you get started with a simple drill to improve your agility and positioning on the court. This drill focuses on lateral movement and quick steps, using cones as markers.

Why Footwork Matters For Beginners

Good footwork helps you:

  • Reach shots more easily
  • Stay balanced
  • Move quickly to the non-volley zone (NVZ)
  • Recover after hitting the ball

This drill is rated "1" in difficulty, meaning it's perfect for beginners. It's a great way to build a solid foundation for your pickleball game.

The Footwork Drill

This drill takes about 30 minutes and requires a pickleball paddle, balls, and cones.

What You'll Need

  • Pickleball paddle
  • Pickleballs
  • Cones (4-6)

Setup

  1. Place the cones in a line, about 2-3 feet apart.
  2. Stand at one end of the line, ready to move laterally.

Instructions

  1. Start in a ready position: knees bent, paddle up, weight balanced.
  2. Shuffle sideways to the first cone.
  3. Touch the cone with your paddle.
  4. Shuffle to the next cone.
  5. Continue touching each cone as you shuffle down the line.
  6. Once you reach the end, shuffle back to the starting point.
  7. Repeat this drill for 10-15 minutes.

Alternative Drills

Here are a couple of alternative drills to practice your footwork:

Shadowing Drill

Imagine an opponent hitting shots to different areas of the court. React to these imaginary shots by moving your feet as if you were actually hitting the ball. This helps with court awareness and anticipation.

Cone Shuffle

Set up cones in a zig-zag pattern. Shuffle between the cones as quickly as possible, touching each cone with your hand. This improves agility and change of direction.

Safety and Effectiveness

To ensure safe and effective training:

  • Wear proper footwear. Court shoes are best.
  • Make sure the area is clear of obstacles.
  • Keep your knees bent and stay low to the ground. This helps with balance and quickness.

Encourage yourself to maintain a good ready position throughout the drill. This will translate to better positioning on the court during a real game.
